چکیده

I report the discovery of a low frequency temperature oscillation in the eastern North Atlantic (NA), which was signi®cantly correlated with the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) in the tropical Paci®c, but led the latter index by a number of months. This discovery is signi®cant, because it demonstrates a link between the tropical Paci®c and the high northerly latitudes which cannot readily be explained in terms of El NinÄ o/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) feedbacks from the tropics, and opens up the possibility that ENSO and temperature anomalies in northerly climes, may actually have a common origin within, or even external to, the global climate system.

Autumn Rainfall Anomalies and Regional Atmospheric Circulation along Establishment of Weak La Nina after Strong El Nino in Iran

To study the Iran precipitation anomaly in September to November of 2016 and its probable connection with ENSO (El Nino-Southern Oscillation). This period with similar cases in the previous 55 years (1964, 1983, and 1995 according to forecasting center of NOAA) was investigated. In all cases, ENSO changed from strong El-Nino to weak La-Nina after a very brief neutral period. In the following, o...

The Extreme Cold Anomaly over Southeast Asia in February 2008: Roles of ISO and ENSO*

A record-breaking, long-persisting extreme cold anomaly (ECA) over Southeast Asia, accompanied by an intraseasonal convection over the Maritime Continent, is identified during the La Niña mature phase in February 2008. The cause of the ECA, in particular the role of the intraseasonal oscillation (ISO) and El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the ECA, is investigated by diagnosing observations...

تاثیرپذیری رخداد بیماری مالاریا در ایران از شاخص اقلیمی ENSO

Background and Objective: Malaria is a disease affecting 300–500 million people in tropical and subtropical regions and causes approximately 2.7 million deaths annually. Currently, no vaccine protects against malaria and resistance to anti-malaria drugs such as chloroquine is increasing and spreading geographically. Moreover, anti-malarial drugs are expensive and often unaffordable to low-incom...

Observed Relationships between the El Niño–Southern Oscillation and the Extratropical Zonal-Mean Circulation

There is increasing evidence indicating that the climate response to variations in the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) includes not only thermally forced zonal wind anomalies in the subtropics but also eddy-driven zonal wind anomalies that extend into the mid–high latitudes of both hemispheres. In this study, new insights into the observed seasonally varying signature of ENSO in the extratr...

On the relationship between Indian Ocean sea surface temperature and the transition from El Niño to La Niña

[1] The relationship between Indian Ocean sea surface temperature and the transition of El Niño events into either La Niña or El Niño–Southern Oscillation neutral conditions is examined in both observations and the retrospective ensemble hindcasts of the National Center for Environmental Prediction Climate Forecast System. The southern Indian Ocean is shown to demonstrate a particularly robust ...
